We've all been there, forgot some cookies in the oven, or a pot on the stove.

Lacombe Fire has responded to around 40 home cooking relating incidents out of their more than 230 calls for service so far this year.

Matt Schultz is a Lieutenant with the Lacombe Fire Department.

"Year to date, Lacombe Fire has responded to about 40 cooking related incidents within a home, of our 236 calls. So a pretty significant percentage of them are cooking related. They very in terms of scope of course, we do treat each alarm call as though they were a full blown structure fire or hazard. We take them very seriously."

Schultz says the increase in numbers however, is likely reflective of more people having in home sercurity systems installed.

"We do see a large amount of just smoke in the home from something maybe overcooked in the oven, something left on the stove, a large percentage are just that. They're a cooking incident with the homeowner home and had an incident with the stove, it set the smoke alarm off and that in turn dispatched us through their alarm system."

Oil related and grease fires can be the most dangerous, Schultz encourages you to use a thermometer to help avoid overheating oil and to keep a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen, use baking soda or find a way to smother the fire, never throw water on it.
