Recently the City of Lacombe approached an artist out of Rimbey, and asked him to take his unique brand of art and apply it to one of the older trees in the corner of Popow Park.

Darren Jones of CabStudio specializes in turning old trees into works of art, using nothing but his chainsaw. And this particular tree, once finished, will resemble a weathered old wizard, complete with birds, flowers, and butterfly’s, all carved into the wood. Jones says the City noticed one of his other creations, and decided to employ his services.

“I have a dragon, down the street over here for a private owner, a private collector, and the City of Lacombe seen that, and they’re starting to utilize these olds trees, which need to be chopped down. It’s awesome, awesome to be able to display this kind of artwork on a tree that has been giving you shade, and everything a tree does, for so long. It’s actually utilizing the stump”.

Jones says he is more than happy to put his passion to good use, and he has heard nothing but positive feedback from the community, especially local kids who have been watching him work. He also says he is happy to attempt any design someone can imagine.

“Oh yea, and they watch. I’ve met a lot of people here. The idea is I carve for my clients all the time, so, it’s just a matter of whatever they want, that’s what I carve for them. And this is awesome, this is a real breath of fresh air to be able to do something a little fanciful”.

Jones hoped to have the tree carved by Tuesday night, after that he will seal it, and stain it, to ensure its longevity. The tree is located in the south west corner of Popo park, near the entrance.
