Grade 7 students at Lacombe Junior High showcased their research projects last night, displaying important moments in Canadian history.

There was a lot to learn at this year’s Alberta Heritage Fair including the history of immigration, the story behind Acadians and the mysterious world of folklore.

13-year-old Brynn Rawlinson did her project on immigration and how it helped shaped country.

With Canada set to let in 300,000 immigrants in 2017, Rawlinson says it’s interesting to see how far the country has come in terms of cultural diversity.

“I learned that a lot of reasons why people came back then and today was the better quality of life and different opportunities for themselves, their children and just a better lifestyle.”

The Fair also gave the students a chance to highlight the history of Canada from its struggles to its triumphs and everything in between.

12-year-old’s Janna Bruggencate and Abby Warner researched the story behind the Acadians and all the troubles they faced throughout history including the Great Deportation where they were expelled from the present day Canadian Maritime provinces by the British.

“We decided to do the Acadians because it’s Abby’s heritage and we previously learned about it in our Social Studies classes and we thought it would be really interesting to find out a lot more about it,” said Bruggencate.

Out of 64 projects, the top 10 will be selected to represent the school at the Calgary Regional Heritage School Fair taking place on May 9.
