Lacombe City Council took another step forward last night in terms of moving development ahead on the new West Area, just on the northeast side of the QE2 and Highway 12 interchange.

Council approved a just over 6 million dollar borrowing bylaw which allows the city to start work on some basic services for the area.

Director of Planning and Operations Matthew Goudy explains how that money will be used.

“So initially it’ll pay for the design, in the long term it’ll pay for bringing water, sewer, and some roadway upgrades that facilitate development of the city’s West area.”

Goudy goes on to say what the next steps are.

“So they are doing grading right now, we are working with our engineers to finish the detailed design, and the developers engineer, to do the detailed design for water and sewer to bring it out to the city’s West edge, and then also across to Lacombe County.”

The total cost the of project is just over 15 million with 5.8 million coming from Lacombe County and 2.2 million from immediate offsite levies from the developer, the City will also put $520,000 from reserves towards the cost.

Edmonton based YFL Development envisions chain restaurants, big-box stores, hotels and car dealerships as possible tenants for their Midway Centre development within that new West Area.
