The streetlights in the Town Blackfalds won't be the only lights converted to LED.

With the newly implemented carbon tax the municipality is looking to reduce energy costs by converting to LED lighting in some of its municipal facilities.

The Civic Centre and the Family and Community Support Services Facility are two buildings that will be receiving energy efficient upgrades.

The town will be converting the existing fluorescent and incandescent lighting to LED.

Mayor Melodie Stol says this could put the town in a position to receive rebates from the province “we’re very excited to find out the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre will be announcing shortly a program specifically for LED conversions and we want to be fully prepared for when that announcement happens so we can take full advantage of that”.

Stol adds in the future the town will also look at converting the lighting in other buildings but right now they're accepting proposals for the current project until February 3 “we’re trying to look at the buildings and facilities that will have the most bang for their buck, and so that is why we have done it in a request for proposal format, in order to prioritize our buildings recognizing we only have so many dollars every year for the capital investment because there’s a cost in purchasing the LED lights, so we can prioritize them and once again get the best bang for the buck for the taxpayer”.
