The building permits numbers comparing 2015 -2017 are out for the town of Blackfalds, and it looks like the fastest growing municipality in Canada is on track to hopefully continue to hold that title this year.

Planning and Development Manager Terry Topolnitsky says the biggest increases are seen in the single family and commercial sectors.

“Those two areas really are the ones that grow for us, and helps our population grow. With the housing that’s coming in and that we expect to come, we feel that it’s going to be another good census this year.”

Topolnitsky says the biggest noticeable projects include road work, new homes, and more services.

“I think that that entrance will be the biggest noticeable thing, at the south end there. We’ll see the two strip malls fill in there next to the Microtel, I think that’s going to be a really good boom. There are a lot of services coming in, we’ve been told there’s some very much interest in it, but we haven’t had the final word yet as to what is actually coming in.”

One of the most substantial increases came from commercial building permits, which went from 15 permits worth $2.24 million in 2016, to 38 permits in 2017 worth just over $10.2 million.

Building permits for 6 new homes in the Anna Close area have already been applied for in December of 2017.
