Big Brothers and Big Sisters Lacombe will be unable to host their annual Bowl for Kids Sake due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraiser is a major loss to the organization but instead they will be offering two new fundraisers one called Walk for Kids’ Sake and The Big Race.

Bowl for Kids sake is generally offered with a student and adult portion of actvities. A Walk for Kids Sake is geared towards students in local schools utilizing Big Brothers and Big Sister programming.

In the coming weeks, students at local schools will be collecting pledge money in local areas.

“We're in seven different schools when in Bentley, Blackfalds, and Lacombe. We have seven schools participating and they've each chosen a different date that they will go out.  The classes will go as their cohort class. It's just a simple little fundraiser for the kids to just go out and get out of the school and get some fresh air, do a walk, and raise some funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters,” said Community Engagement Coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters Lacombe, Wendy Griffin.

Students will also be participating in a scavenger hunt in addition to their walk .

The Big Race

The Big Race is geared towards adults, families, and teams who are looking to get out on an adventure for a good cause.

“You'll be going out and about to Lacombe and the surrounding areas looking for clues, taking pictures of yourselves and your team at different sites, events, and businesses looking for clues, QR codes, and fun things like that,” said Griffin.

The event takes place over a ten day period with an extensive list of clues that can be located in Lacombe, Blackfalds, Clive, Alix, and Bentley. Teams can choose their own fundraising goals and help out Big Brothers and Big Sisters as well as have fun.

“It's going to be a very exciting event. We're looking for registrants for that and also looking for some corporate sponsors and prize sponsors for that event as well,” said Griffin.

As always, Big Brothers Big Sister Lacombe is looking for more mentors for youth in the area. Griffin says there’s a special need for male mentors. For more information on how you can get involved in mentorship, click here.
