Friends of the Wells family in Stettler are rallying around baby Tinsel, who's in the fight of her life at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton.

Tinsel was born two weeks ago premature at 32 weeks and is facing a number of complications.

It means frequent trips to Edmonton for her Stettler family, with parking alone costing around $14 each time.

Mother Avery has been staying at the Ronald McDonald house in Edmonton.

Avery's best friend, Tshanna Lenz, describes some of the challenges baby Tinsel is facing, including being born with a rare genetic disorder known as Trisomy 13.

“Which essentially means that some of her DNA has three chromosomes instead of two, and it causes a lot of problems. She’s born with extra fingers and toes, cleft lip and cleft palate, a heart defect, a brain bleed, and essentially she is at risk of total organ failure.”

Lenz has set up a GoFundMe account in order to help the Wells family alleviate some of the financial burdens during this difficult time.

Avery Wells says the funds will also help with her husband and 3 kids back home in Stettler.

“The only thing that I could really say is that the thing we might need help with is Christmas, because the last few weeks have completely killed us, and my kids will likely not get one without help.”
