A town hall addressing the state of seniors care in our province is making a stop in Red Deer tonight.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employee's is hoping to shine some light on issues facing seniors care, including short staffing, and poor scheduling and training for employees.

The AUPE says more beds and living facilities for seniors are needed across the Province, but many of the ones already running have their fair share of flaws.

Union Vice President Karen Weiers says they're looking to raise the issue of poor seniors care with for-profit facilities.

"What we're seeing is more issues within these for-profit providers. They get millions in tax payer’s dollars to provide the care, but they then take that funding and boost their profits. They're not even required to publicly disclose how they've used that money, and this hurts the seniors and staff who care for them. It should be people before profits."

Weiers says many communities are seeing these for-profit facilities pop up, and they want to show people what to watch out for.

"Publicly funded beds and services actually need to grow, and privately funded facilities need to be held accountable for the public money they're given and the service they're providing. You shouldn't have a profit when it comes to health care, it should go to care. There needs to be more transparency and accountability."

Tonight's town hall will be held at the Red Deer legion, and starts at 7:00pm.
