We hear it time and time again about being prepared for an emergency.

Perhaps following Tuesday night's events, some people may be taking it a little more seriously moving forward.

As we head into the summer season, heading to the lake is a popular place to spend some down time and we all know how quickly the weather can change in Alberta.

Deputy Director of Emergency Management in Sylvan Lake, Dave Brand talks about the unique challenges a day at the lake presents, and some things to keep in mind.

“People are at the lake and enjoying their day and typically more unplugged from technology then we would be sitting at home, or in our car, or in the office where we have access to radio and TV and cellphones. We absolutely encourage people to have a plan, if you’re going to go down to the lakeshore whether you are out on the water or just up on the beach, if severe weather does come in, what’s your plan, what are your thoughts. Are you going to try and get to your car or are you going to go to a building? Just thinking about that objectively before they go down because then you’re more prepared”.

Brand says finding shelter along the lakeshore can be a challenge given the large open areas, and he recommends not standing under trees due to lightening and the potential for branches to come down.

For Town residents he absolutely recommends putting together an emergency kit and encourages you to visit getprepared.ca
