The Town of Blackfalds took a step closer towards its 55-plus housing project with the formation of a committee that will steer the build.

From council, Mayor Richard Poole and Coun. Marina Appel will sit on the committee, as well as the chief administrative officer and FCSS manager.

The Lacombe Foundation and Bethany Group will also be represented on the committee of eight.

Tendering for architecture services has started, with design, budget and client housing estimates due by mid-October.

The town has dedicated an acre of land at the corner of Broadway Avenue and South Street for the project.

Back in late March, a public consultation survey was launched to gauge residents’ preferences for what they’d like to see in the project — whether they preferred government-subsidized units or private sector housing; supportive or independent living.

Poole said they’re still waiting for those results.

Last year, council adopted a project schedule where occupancy would take place in 2021.
