Many are calling Tuesday night’s tempest in Red Deer one of the most powerful storms they’ve ever seen.

However, it certainly won’t be the last.

Ted Koleff is vice-president of claims at AMA Insurance. He says there are a few things home owners can do to mitigate damage caused by the next one.

Some of his tips include:

  • Checking roofs and sidings for loose pieces
  • Removing dead or dying trees on the property
  • Trimming branches that are hanging close to the home
  • Securing or storing items like patio furniture

Despite appearances, Koleff said there were “relatively few” claims from Red Deer resulting from the storm.

“It looked pretty awful. Power out, roofs off, et cetera. We were surprised how few we got yesterday,” he said. “And overnight, in our after hours, we tend to expect a lot of calls come in. I think we got 10 calls come in overnight.”
