Driving too fast, distracted, impaired or aggressively is the biggest factors that lead to deaths on our provinces highways.

Alberta Motor Association Vice President of Government Relations Jeff Kasbrick spoke at yesterday's Safe Communities Central Alberta AGM, about what can be done to stop people from doing those things, and ultimately keep our roads safer.

Kasbrick says their organization is proposing that Mounties would be able to suspend the licenses and seize the vehicle of people caught going 50 over the speed limit, a law that other provinces have already implemented.

"What we've seen in those other Provinces, is that it's contributed to a reduction in some of these excessive speeding circumstances. Creating a safer driving community for everybody. It's quite important that we provide our Police Officers with all of the tools necessary to deal with these most severe cases."

As for distracted driving, Kasbrick says there's technology available to stop people from using their phones, but at the end of the day it's each of our conscience decision to use it behind the wheel or not.

Kasbrink says one of the biggest areas of concern, though, is that marijuana will soon be legalized, and our Country is well behind the 8 ball when it comes to realizing the dangers of driving high, and from an enforcement standpoint.

"We need to be undertaking. Starting yesterday. A very robust public education campaign, to help inform motorists that they need to be aware of the impact of drugs and marijuana on their ability to drive. We need to have those conversations first, and that we're being proactive with all these issues that we know are going to be an issue, rather than reacting to it."

His final message.

Kasbrick says the only thing we should be worrying about when driving, is making sure we get to our destination alive.
