With major strides made to prepare for future development to the west of Lacombe, Alberta Transportation is also working with the City and Lacombe County as they plan for the future development of the Highway 2 and 12 interchange, ensuring any accesses needed to the proposed Midway Centre aligns with the province's future plans for the QE2.

The Highway 2 Corridor Improvement Study, done by Alberta Transportation, is a study which involves all existing and future land plans from the municipalities along that corridor, to help plan for future highway expansions.

Infrastructure Manager for Alberta Transportation Stuart Richardson says the City of Lacombe wants to start developing the northeast quadrant of that interchange soon, but they have to make sure they don't compromise the potential for future highway upgrades.

“Unless the City and County include planning for the ultimate build of the development areas, in their Inter-municipal Development Plan, we’ll just have to project for the worst case scenario at that location. I think the City and County are looking into doing some study, to identify what the ultimate needs are for that interchange.”

The City and County of Lacombe both recently signed an agreement to extend water and sewer systems up to and across the QE2, planning for servicing to the proposed Midway Centre.

They will have to work in conjunction with Alberta Transportation, to ensure building plans, don't interfere with future highway plans.

The final draft of the Highway 2 Corridor Improvement Study will be released in December.
