With at least a quarter of Albertans living in condos, the Government of Alberta wants to make sure all their needs are being met, and everyone is being treated fairly.

In order to protect condo owners and strengthen the industry, the government will be holding select open houses across the province in the upcoming weeks, to hear from anyone who owns, operates, or develops condos, before upgrading the condo laws in our province.

Press Secretary for Service Alberta Tina Faiz says the previous government passed some rules back in 2014, but they were never came in effect. She says condo owners want rules that can help condo boards govern themselves better.

“The condo legislation in the province…some rules were actually passed by the previous government in 2014 but they’ve never come into force. And a lot of time has passed between their review of rules in the province that in the end never came into effect. So yes, we’ve been hearing from condo owners who want more modern and fair rules.”

Issues such as voting procedures, financial considerations, insurance requirements, rules on rentals deposits and termination of agreements, reserve funds, and possibly forming a condo tribunal to resolve disputes outside of courts will all be considered.

There will be an open house in Red Deer on Tuesday, July 25th from 4 until 8pm, down at the Red Deer Museum and Art gallery.

There will be additional open houses on July 26th in Calgary, July 27th in Edmonton, August 1st in Lethbridge, and August 3rd in Fort McMurray.

There will also be an online survey launched later this summer to gather more input.
