After a rocky last couple of years at the Alberta Downs horse racing track, the future looks brighter, as a few entrepreneurs purchased the track this week.

Kurt and Kyla Belich along with their business partner Ross Morrison, are the new owners of the only one mile dirt track and 7/8 mile grass track in Western Canada.

Kurt says there are a few things that need to be addressed on the property before it can get back in working condition.

"Just because it hasn’t been ran for a while, we just have to do general yard cleanup and maintenance and finish the buildings. For example, there needs to be some washrooms put in, the first floor needs to be finished, the second floor is finished, a kitchen… things of that nature, nothing to earth shattering. As it stands right now, we don’t want to open the facility until we have it finished and completed.”

The facility also includes a large grandstand, a number of stables and a warm up area.

Kurt says it's much too early to know for sure whether or not there will be horse racing there next year, but he does plan to open Alberta Downs up to a variety of new events, such as weddings, concerts, and other special events.

They hope to have it open by spring 2018.
