During the April 14th Government of Alberta coronavirus update, Minister Tyler Shandro announced a three-million-dollar grant to Albertan caregivers.

“We know that caregivers are likely feeling the additional stress of the pandemic. The act of caring for another person takes on added urgency and many may feel or begin to feel being overwhelmed a completely natural reaction,” said Minister Tyler Shandro.

“This why I am pleased to announce today that we are providing a 3-million-dollar grant to caregivers in Alberta to expand their services. This will allow more caregivers to benefit from things like a province-wide inventory of supports, expanded hours for the caregiver advisory phoneline, a referral system linking caregivers with Caregivers Alberta through healthcare providers and updated and expanded support programs.”

The minister recommended that all caregivers reach out if they need support or assistance during this time.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Dina Hinshaw announced 138 new cases of coronavirus in the province noting a large increase of cases in the Calgary zone due to new testing protocols.

“The vast majority of the cases are in the Calgary zone where we have increased testing over the past several days in order to identify opportunities to limit spread given that this zone consistently had the highest rates of illness,” said Dr. Hinshaw who anticipates more information this week based on the increase of tests in the zone.

The total number of cases is now 1,870 confirmed cases.  914 people have now recovered from the illness 37 more than April 13th.  Additionally, two more deaths have occurred as a result of the illness both deaths were located at continuing care facilities in the Calgary and Edmonton zones.
