Minister of Advanced Education Marlin Schmidt attended Red Deer College’s first annual State of College Address Wednesday night and introduced the new Chair of their Board of Governors.

Morris Flewwelling was officially named RDC‘s new Board Chair.

Flewwelling will taking over from Shelley Ralston who held the position from 2012 to 2016.

Schmidt said he believes it’s a great choice for the college and was honoured to make the announcement.

“It’s an important institution to the community and provides a significant service to the people of Central Alberta, not only as education, but as an innovation centre and I’m really excited to have Morris leading the institution for the next few years.”

Flewwelling said he’s looking forward to helping the college continue to grow, but never really saw this coming.

“Personally it means quite a lot. I’ve worked with this college, as it’s been commented, for the past 50 years in various capacities in the community. Sometimes intensively and sometimes less intensively and I never really imagined that I would be the Chairman.”

RDC president Joel Ward also answered questions concerning the college’s chances of receiving polytechnic university status and said an answer is expected sometime this fall.
