It was a day of celebration on Saturday for those you have struggled with addiction, but have kicked the habit.

Many gathered at City Hall Park for Red Deer Recovery Day, to share their stories and give support to those living a life of addiction.

Representatives from multiple organizations from around the City, including Turning Point, Safe Harbour and AHS, were on hand to provide information to those dealing with the disease.

Red Deer native and author of The Sun is Gone, a book about her life and her brother’s battle with alcoholism, Jodee Prouse also attended the event.

She had some words of advice for families dealing with addiction.

“I went to therapy treatments with my brother so many times and always concentrated on what he needed to do and I know now I have no control on what he does and what he needs to do.”

“Talk to someone who specializes in addiction recovery and/or mental illness and find out what you need to do as a family.”

One inspirational speaker who attended the event was Earl Scatch, who grew up in a home of alcoholics.

After years of battling the disease and spending time in prison, Scatch kicked the habit and is now five years sober.

“I was confused. I didn’t know what life was with all my addictions with alcohol. One day I opened my eyes and I saw that dream and I wanted it too.”

“So, I went out and did it.”

It was the fourth year in which they have held the event, with organizers saying the support from the community keeps getting bigger and bigger.

“This is a very supported thing in our community, people care. It’s something that effects everybody and I’m really grateful,” said organizer and recovering addict Krista Black.
