Communications Lieutenant with Red Deer Emergency Services Holly Shrader received the 911 call on Friday, October 13th from Jason Stearns, whose wife Rachel was over a week past her due date with their 2nd baby.

Induced at the hospital, she was sent home to rest, but within an hour she called for her husband. He says he barely had enough time to react.

“When we got home, things progressed quite quickly, and she (Rachel) had said that ‘I had a couple contractions and we should get back up to the hospital’… Then all of a sudden she stopped and said, ‘No this is happening right now, call 911.’ I barely had gotten my name, and phone number and address to make sure the ambulance was on its way to the right place, and I told the lady (Shrader) no, just wait the baby is on its way, I’ll get back to. And within 30 seconds of me putting my phone down, my wife was holding the baby.”

Daxton Duke Stearns was born right there on the bathroom floor at 1:44pm.

It will be a day his parents and Shrader will never forget.

“It was an awesome day, it makes your day. It makes your week, your year.”

The Stearns, along with their first son, two year old Cooper, met Shrader in an emotional meeting at the Red Deer Emergency Services headquarters this morning (Nov, 23rd).

This is the second time in Shrader’s 20 year career that she has helped deliver a baby over the phone, but the first time she was able to meet the family after.
