The 2018 Budget Survey for the City of Lacombe was presented at council meeting on Monday (September 25th, 2017).

Citizens were given a three week period to respond to the online survey, letting the City know exactly where they would like to see their tax dollars going.

383 people responded, which is up 45% from last year. People said they would like to see an increase in shopping and business attractions, as well as a need for fiscal responsibility, by having things in place like stabilized tax rates, reducing the amount of spending, and reducing property taxes.

Councilman Peter Bouwsema says there are a few recurring issues which residents have mentioned in the last few online surveys, such as the need for more sidewalks.

“One of the things that keeps coming up is sidewalks along Fairway Drive. And I understand that completely why they desire to have that. So that needs to be addressed with the new council.”

He says people also talked about what they wanted less of, and it's something he has heard complaints about for a number of years.

“Some things that people came forward with that I recall is fireworks. We have a number of fireworks within the community, four times as I recall in a year, and that may need to be considered and addressed. Fireworks are intended to be an enjoyable event, but that doesn’t mean we have to do it four times.”

People also wanted to see a reduction in the amount of money spent on policing, street decorations and signs, as well as less need for snow removal on city streets, a reduced number of city workers, and reducing garbage removal days in favour of more recycling.
