COMPETITION RESUMES AT 2019 CANADA WINTER GAMES WITH NEW SET OF SPORTS

(February 24, 2019 - Red Deer, AB)

The second week of competition resumed at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, with Alberta sitting in second place of the medal standings.

Alberta had three of its team competing today, with curling and women’s hockey beginning their preliminary tournaments and squash hitting the courts with singles and team events.

No medals were awarded Sunday.

ALBERTA CURLING TEAMS WIN MATCHES AGAINST QUEBEC

In curling at the Pidherney Curling Centre, both curling teams were in action in the opening draw a facing Quebec.

The men’s team easily took a 7-1 victory after Quebec shook hands following the sixth of eight ends. Team Alberta, skipped by Nathan Molberg, 18, opened the tournament with a strong 3-point end to take control of the match. He conceded a point to his opponent and went on to score singles in the next four ends, stealing three straight. After game one of the preliminary round, Team Alberta shows a 1-0 record.

In women’s action, Team Alberta skipped by Julia Bakos, 15, earned the victory 6-3 in seven ends. With the hammer, Team Quebec scored the first point and then scored five points in the following three ends to lead 5-1 at the halfway mark. Quebec bounced back with two singles, but Alberta scored the one in the seventh to seal the game. Quebec shook hands conceding the victory to the host province. Team Alberta shows a 1-0 record after the first day of competition.

Team Alberta will face the Northwest Territories in tomorrow’s morning draw starting at 10:00 a.m. and Newfoundland in the evening draw at 5:00 p.m.

BETHANY CHURCHILL ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS IN SQUASH

On the squash courts at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, Team Alberta had four squash players in action.

All four members of Team Alberta won their respective preliminary matches, advancing to the quarterfinals. Jana Dweek and Bethany Churchill each won their respective matches 3-0 to advance in the women’s tournament. In men’s action, Antonio Mendes and Seif Elfiky represented Alberta, winning their matches 3-1, 3-0 respectively.

Later in the afternoon, in quarterfinals, both Mendes and Elfiky dropped 3-0 their matches ending their tournament. The same can be said for Jenna Dweek, losing 3-1 to her opponent from Ontario. Bethany Churchill, however, defeated her opponent from Nova Scotia and advanced to the semifinals, set to take place tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m.

The 5-day team tournament also begun today with Team Alberta facing arch-rivals from British Columbia. The men dropped their match 3-1 while the women won 3-1 their matchup against BC. Tomorrow, Team Alberta will play against the Northwest Territories in the team tournament.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY SQUAD LOSES OVER BRITISH COLUMBIA

The women’s hockey Canada Winter Games tournament began today in Red Deer, AB and the host province faced off against British Columbia.

Team Alberta dropped their opening match 6-1 to a fierce BC team. British Columbia scored the opening goal of the game late in the first period. Alberta came back in the second period equalizing, thanks to a powerplay goal by Kassy Betinol. But British Columbia answered immediately, and never looked back. The visitors scored twice more in the second period and added two goals in the third to seal the victory. Jenna Buglioni scored a hat trick for British Columbia. Shots on net were 26-15 in favour of Team Alberta.

Team Alberta will play against Nova Scotia on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Centrium.
