Three Lacombe boys helped their team win gold at the Baseball Alberta Junior AAA Baseball Provincial Championships over the long weekend.

Ty Wagar, Rylan Zens and Brawley Douglas all play for the Innisfail Merchants, and along with their team, brought home a win that they haven’t claimed in the tournament since 2011.

Zens came in as a pitcher during the final inning, helping close the 13-7 victory right on Innisfail's home turf.

Wagar says the team built up momentum throughout the weekend.

“We actually ended up putting up 72 runs in five games which is kind of unheard of so we’ve got the bats to compete with anyone,” Wagar says.

He says they had a full team roster, and having everyone in attendance created a bond that he’s hopeful will help them claim another medal during the Western Canadian Championships this coming weekend in St. Albert.

Like Wagar, Zens likes their chances.

"If we keep rolling like we did this weekend at Provincials, I think we have a good shot at making it to the final and possibly winning the whole thing. I'm pretty confident in our team's ability to hit and play defence, as well as pitching," Zens says.

The Western Canadian Championships begin August 10.

All three are off to play in the Canadian College Baseball Conference in the fall.
