When you flip on the TV Boxing Day to tune into World Junior hockey action, you'll have a local boy to cheer for.

Sylvan Lake native Tyler Steenbergen made the roster after working hard at selection camp.

He says it's that work hard attitude that's helped carry him this far in his hockey career.

“I’ve had a couple of setbacks in my junior career so far, but you know, that just made me push even harder and work extra hard to get to this point.  Obviously all my hard work is paying off now and I’m excited to get going and obviously we want to bring back a gold medal for Canada”.

Steenbergen is into his 4th season with the WHL's Swift Current Broncos, the centre was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes 128th overall in the June draft.

He'll be in action today in a pre-tournament match-up as Canada faces the Czech Republic, and says he's good to go.

“I’m physically ready, I’m mentally (ready), you know that’s a big part of it, getting your head in the game at an early point, so you know I think I’m ready to go and everyone on the team is excited to get the games going”.

Puck drop is 5 pm our time, Canada faces Switzerland in one more pre-tournament game Friday ahead of Boxing Day action.
