Rosetown forward Garrett Bembridge scored with 34 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Red Wings a 3-2 victory, spoiling the Lacombe Generals’ home opener and handing the team its first loss of the ACHW season.

Bembridge scored on the powerplay, his shot beating Generals goalie Steven Stanford from the left faceoff circle.

The Red Wings’ Torrie Dyck scored the game-tying goal early in the third period after the Generals led 2-1 to close the second frame, thanks to goals from forward Brett Robertson and Kyle Bailey.

Brody Hoffman started in net for the Red Wings, stopping 25 of 27 shots.

Rosetown outshot Lacombe 31-27.

Generals forward Kyle Bailey crashes the net in the first period to score his first goal of the season.

Despite Saturday night’s loss, Generals head coach Sean Robertson is happy with how his team has started the year.

“We’re still feeling our way through this. I was pleased with our effort and I was pleased with how responsible we played. We got some things to clean up. We have to execute against teams like this if we want to win, Robertson said.

It was a battle of two undefeated teams, with the Red Wings entering the contest 2-0.

The Lacombe Generals had started the season 3-0, with victories over Stony Plain, Innisfail and Fort Saskatchewan, outscoring the opposition by a combined 14-4.

Robertson says his two goalies, Stanford and Kraymer Barnstable, are a big reason for the early success.

“The system we play, we try to limit how much work they get. But at the same time, they still have to make those saves and they have, he said.
