A local Red Deer County resident took home a gold medal home for Team Alberta on Monday, February 25th.

19-year-old Kalena Soehn won gold in women’s trampoline at the Canada Winter Games.

“I’m buzzing! I’m still shaking. The energy here is just flowing through me right now,” said Kalena shortly after receiving her gold-winning score of 51.170 points.

“As soon as I was finished my last trick, I just felt accomplished. I knew I had done the ten skills I wanted to do. There was nothing else I could have done except make it a little prettier,” added Kalena.

The silver medal went to Team Quebec’s Laurence Roux who scored 49.170 points.

In addition to the finals, in the preliminaries, Kalena’s two routines earned her the leading score as well.

Alongside Kalena, was her coach and brother Keegan Soehn who also participated in men’s trampoline at the games.

“Anyone of my family members would have been great, but my brother and I are really close.”

Being that the entire Soehn family participates in the sport of trampoline, Kalena had a lot of support going into the competition already, but Team Alberta supporters showed up cheering loudly for her before she performed. However, Kalena did not let that get to her head.

“I had to take a huge breath and say my routine in my head again and then I hopped on and it turned out for the best.”

As for the Canada Winter Games standings, Team Québec continues to have a huge lead in first place, where Team Alberta follows after in second, and Team Ontario is close behind Alberta in third.
