If earning a silver medal in volleyball at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg wasn’t enough, Red Deer’s Reece Lehman had another chance to represent his hometown.

During the closing ceremonies at the Games, Lehman was award the luxury of being handed the Canada Games torch, which will be heading to Red Deer.

It was an experience he was extremely grateful for.

“It was very special. I know they wanted an athlete from Red Deer to represent the next Games and carry the torch. I know there weren’t too many Red Deer athletes there, but I was selected as the one to carry the torch.”

“It was definitely cool to go out in front of everyone and do that.”

Lehman and the rest of Team Alberta lost in the finals to Ontario, but it was close with Ontario winning 16-14 in the final set.

He said, although they didn’t win gold, the whole experience is something he will never forget.

“I know I was lucky enough to be one of the few to go there. It’s something different, a multi-sport event and the whole atmosphere is something I’ve never been a part of before.”

A graduate of Lindsay Thurber, Lehman will be heading down to Calgary in the fall to continue his career with the U of C Dinos.
