From Red Deer College Athletics:

Regan Fathers, from the RDC Kings, added two more prestigious awards to his resume on Wednesday, March 6 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship Banquet & Awards.

The fifth-year from East Fremantle, Western Australia was named the CCAA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year and an All-Canadian.

Fathers edged out Reid Marriott of Douglas College, Wesley Lau from Conestoga College, Zane Hamilton of University of New Brunswick-St. John, and Nicolas Fortin from Cégep Limoilou for the Player of the Year award.

Along with the Player of the Year nominees, Fathers joined Simon Friesen (Capilano University), Mitchell Lewington (NAIT), Michel Leblanc (Le Collège La Cité), Alex Tournier (Cégep de L’Outaouais) and Brett Butler (Holland College) as All-Canadians.

Fathers, a Kinesiology student, had a superb season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). He led the Red Deer College Kings (18-6) to second place in the competitive south division and dominated in several statistical categories.

The six-foot-six right side hitter led the league with 435 total kills and 5.37 kills per set.

He was selected the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year and to the South All-Conference team, which was announced in Edmonton on February 20.

Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha is proud of the all-star player’s recognition but knows Fathers places the achievements of the Kings above his own. “I think that the individual awards are always nice, and speak to the very impressive season that Regan has had,” said Schulha. “However, Regan would be the first one to tell you that he would gladly give up any individual accolades to have his team be successful. I am excited to see what this weekend has in store.”

The awards were presented on Wednesday evening at Holiday Inn & Suites Red Deer South.

Fathers and the Kings are hosting the CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship from March 7-9 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. In their first match, the Red Deer College Kings will play the 2018 CCAA Champions, the Limoilou Titans, on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
