138 Racers braved the rainy weather Saturday to support local youth.

The 2017 BDO Run for Youth featured 3k, 5k, and 10k races along with a half marathon, with all funds raised going to Central Alberta Youth Unlimited here in Lacombe.

Youth Unlimited Executive Director Jake Schellenberg says they were able to raise around $14,000 for their mentoring programs and youth house.

"That's largely in part due to our corporate sponsors. We could not be more appreciative of them. When you put one of these races on and try to make it like a proffesional race, with the chip timing and t-shirts, you don't make a whole lot of money off the racers. So the corporate sponsorships are huge."

Schellenberg also thanked the many volunteers who stepped up, and sat out in the rain helping the race run smoothly.

"Once you start running, your body just kind of goes numb, and you just run. But when you just sit or stand there as a volunteer it is actually hard work because you're freezing cold. I think we had just over 45 volunteers, so a huge thank you to them as well for keeping the racers safe, and helping us pull this off."

The race was a rebooted version of the former Lacombe Half Marathon, after BDO approached Youth Unlimited hoping to relaunch the event again and help a local non-profit group while doing so.
