The Neyaskweyahk arena in Maskwacis has a chance to receive $100,000 worth of upgrades.

Finalists for the Kraft Hockeyville’s upgrade contest were named this week and Maskwacis was on the list.

The winner will also get to host an NHL preseason game, something the President of Minor Hockey Association in Maskwacis, Darrin Simone, said would be great for the community.

“With the social problems we have in our community, some (kids) won’t ever get to watch a hockey game. This might be the only the chance,” said Simone.

“A lot of people work with the youth and it would be a great opportunity for our youth to witness and be a part of it.”

Former pro hockey player and local, Stephen Wagner, was at the official announcement Friday morning and said hockey has always been a good way to keep kids out of trouble.

“Hockey is a big family thing. You have a family at home, but then you also have a family at the rink and if you’re going to the rink each day, you’re meeting with that family and ‘guess what?’ you’re also staying out of trouble,” said Wagner.

Didsbury also made the list as a finalist with voting beginning on Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
