A bunch of little hockey players will be taking over Lacombe this weekend. The Initiation-Novice tournament will be bringing 24 teams from all over the province, including 7 of Lacombe's teams.

Ami Rintoul, chair of the initiation side says this tournament has a special tinge of pink that will show some support for one of the hockey families.

“We’ve got an out of town team coming in who’s manager is battling cancer now for the second time, and the hockey community has been very supportive,” says Rintoul.

The tape was donated by a distributor from Reds Source for Sports, supplying the tape for all 300 players in the tournament. Rintoul says although they were ready to upfront the costs, the donation was very much appreciated.

“We just wanted to make sure we kept that going and show her and her family some support when they are at our arena this weekend.”

The 300 players will be on the ice all weekend long, with two games on the schedule for Friday evening.

Rintoul says it will be busy, and all the kids will have their time to shine.

“Initiation kids don’t play finals or anything, they just play three games and have some fun and do relay games and a shootout.”

She explains that the competition gets fiercer for the older kids.

“The seven-year-olds final games are based on a sportsmanship vote and our eight-year-olds will actually be competing in the gold medal finals at the end.”

The tournament will all take place at the Gary Moe Auto group Sportsplex.
