The Lacombe Generals officially claimed the provincial championship following a two-game total goal series against the Innisfail Eagles.

On Saturday, the Generals played an exciting game in Innisfail resulting in a large number of penalties for both sides. Despite this, the Generals were able to gain a quick lead in goals, ending the game with a score of 4-1.

However, on Sunday the Eagles upped the ante at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex in Lacombe. The game was neck and neck and the Eagles were fighting hard to gain goals by pulling the goalie on a power play just before the game ended. However, the Generals managed to score a goal on their empty net tying the game at 3-3.

The Generals took the series seven goals to the Eagles’ four.

To defenseman, Brennan Evans the win felt a little strange given the nature of the series.

“It’s definitely odd. The two-game total points is kind of weird in hockey, you don’t see that very often. But you know, it’s a character thing and there is a lot of pride in that room and that’s why we’re here. That’s why we’ve won the province 13 of the last 16 years."

Evans also admitted that the game may not have been the best they have ever played, “I think it got away from us in the second period a bit with the penalties and everything else. Like I said before, we just had to grit our teeth and find a way to get the tie.”

Now that the team has won the provincial championship, the Allan Cup is just around the corner.

Coach Sean Robertson is confident that the Generals will play well after winning the ACHW championship a few weeks ago and now provincials. He says that there will be practising and bonding ahead for the boys.

“We got three practices, probably. We’re going to have the group together, finally. We’ve got three practices, we’ve got a couple of pre-game skates, and we’re all staying together. We’ll spend a lot of time together here, tweak some things, and make sure we’re feeling good about ourselves when we get going,” explained Robertson.

The Allan Cup will be held at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex from April 8th to 13th. The Generals will have their first game on April 8th at 8:00 PM. For tickets or more information, click here.
