Three first period goals were enough to give the Lacombe Generals a 3-2 victory over the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings in exhibition play on Saturday night at the sportsplex.

After the Vikings struck first with a goal from forward Mitch McMullin, the Generals' Cody Cartier responded with two of his own. Defenceman Evan Oberg added another to give Lacombe a 3-1 lead at first intermission.

Vikings forward Ryan Groom scored in the second period but Augustana would get no closer.

"In the second period, I thought they had us on the ropes," said Generals head coach Sean Robertson.

"In the third period, our guys just kind of bucked down ... we've got older guys. They've played a lot of hockey and they understand how to play in certain situations."

Kraymer Barnstable started in goal for the Generals, making 24 saves.

The Generals outshot the Vikings 44-26.

Robertson said his team has lots of work ahead as they prepare for the upcoming Allan Cup Hockey West season, particularly defensive zone coverage.

"We've just been getting kinks out and getting rust out in our practices. We haven't had a chance to do systems or anything," he said. "We've got everything to work on."

Lacombe hosts a preseason tournament next weekend. The Generals start the regular season on Oct. 14.
