There seemed to be a strong rivalry between the Lacombe Generals and the Innisfail Eagles on Wednesday night as the Generals came back for revenge in their home game. Following their 4-3 loss in overtime on Friday, January 18th against the Eagles, the Generals came into the game hungry for victory.

Heading into the game, Sean Robertson, head coach of the Generals was optimistic, “Our expectations are that we play the right way, we play with a purpose, and that everything we do is oriented towards success for our team.”

It was a long and tiresome first period for both teams and the period ended with no goals for either team.

The first goal was scored with about three minutes left in the second period by the Innisfail Eagles. In the third period, the General’s Stephen Phee scored the first goal followed by another by Jesse Todd, and finally, the game-winning goal made again by Stephen Phee.

“I picked it up and cut across the ice. I saw Huxley driving and I threw it on net and it ended up going in,” said Stephen Phee about his game-winning goal.

The game finished with the Eagles scoring another goal, leaving the score at 3-2 for the Lacombe Generals.

Regarding the rivalry between the Generals and Eagles, Phee commented, “It’s definitely a rivalry. I mean we are close, a half hour away, and we’ve been playing each other for years.”

In addition to the chaos of a revengeful game, the Lacombe Generals had a new goalie on the ice. Tyler Weiman was not intimidated by the longstanding rivalry and performed well despite an aggressive and challenging game.

Phee commended the effort made by the new goalie, “Our goalie played phenomenal tonight,” and added, “He played awesome for his first game, and made some big saves when we needed them.”

The Generals return to the ice on Saturday, January 26th at 7:30 pm against the Rosetown Redwings at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex.
