The Lacombe Generals are just two wins away from their fourth Allan Cup title.  The team earned a bye to the semifinals of the tournament, finishing first in their round robin division with a tie against the host Rosetown Redwings on Tuesday and a 5-3 win over Ontario’s Stoney Creek Generals on Wednesday.

An interesting statistic in this year’s tournament has been how evenly matched the teams seem to be so far.  Out of six round robin games played, four ended in a tie.  Gens centre Dennis Rix says it’s making for an interesting playoff round.

“It’s great competition. You can see with all the ties going on in the previous games, it’s tight hockey so it’s going to be tight all the way down the stretch for sure.”

Next up for the Generals will be their semifinal match tonight at 8pm against the Elsipogtog Hawks.

The team from New Brunswick representing the Atlantic region was ranked sixth in the round robin but came away with a surprising victory against the Rosetown Redwings in their quarter final match to eliminate the host team from the tournament yesterday.

A win there sends the Generals to the finals for the 9th time in 12 Allan Cup tournament appearances.  They would play the winner of the other semifinal game between the South East Prairie Thunder and the Stoney Creek Generals. The final will be broadcast live on TSN2 on Saturday night at 8pm.
