A match-up between two 3-1 Alberta Football League teams on Saturday was not the clash of titans people were looking for.

The Central Alberta Buccaneers defeated the St. Albert Stars 56-8.

Buccaneers quarterback Brandon Leyh threw for five touchdowns in the first half, connecting twice each with Ben Hnatiuk and Preston Bailey, and once with Josh Blanchard.

“Everything worked out perfect. As far as our (offensive) line went, they protected the quarterback, allowed him to make moves, throw the ball down the field,” Hnatiuk said post-game.

The receiver was impressed by the Bucs quarterback, who finished with seven touchdown passes.

“(Leyh's) just a big body in the pocket. He can stand in there, take the hits and still be able to get the ball down field. I've never played with a quarterback who's been able to do that. Even when it comes down to it, he can get outside the pocket, throw on the run.”

In the first quarter, Tylor Johannesson returned a missed Stars field goal attempt 110 yards for a touchdown.

After halftime, Leyh completed a pass to Hnatiuk for the third time.

Also in the third quarter, Josh Blanchard took a shovel pass from Leyh to the endzone for his second touchdown of the game.

With the win, the Bucs improve to 4-1 on the season and take sole possession of second place in the AFL.

On July 14, they visit the Grande Prairie Drillers.
