The senior boys from Central Alberta Christian High School won bronze at the ASAA 1A basketball provincials on home court last weekend, beating Stirling High 82-69.

“They used everything that we’ve been working on all year long and put it on the floor. It was an amazing performance by them and they deserved this third-place win. I was very proud of them,” said Knights head coach Veronica DenOudsten.

Guard Matthew Baong poured in 34 points for CACHS, with the most pivotal basket being a four-point play putting the Knights up 14 with 1:47 left in the final quarter.

Elijah Funkhouser scored 15 points and Evan Wiersma, 12.

Olds Koinonia Christian School beat Rosemary 82-69 in the gold medal game.

Girls finish 10th

The CACHS girls finished 10th, with a 1-1 record during the tournament.

Grade 10 player CACHS player Emily Folkerts tries a layup in their game against the Bassano Broncos.

It was still a special weekend for the team’s Grade 12 players, Hannah van Iperen, Cassie vanGelderen and Caitlin Debree.

“No matter how you finish, it’s always a cool experience to do all this team stuff and spend three days with the people you’ve always been working with in the gym,” said van Iperen.

Debree said the future is bright for their team.

“Our Grade 11s have been on the starting line up so I think a bunch of our players are really good. We already know we have good potential to make it to provincials next year,” she said.
