In their first matchup of 2017 since last year's AFL final, the defending champions Fort McMurray Monarchs beat the Central Alberta Buccaneers 47-7 in Lacombe on Saturday.

Much of the Monarch’s offence came from quarterback Deric Davis, who made five touchdown passes.

Meanwhile, it was a tough game for the Bucs’ own pivot, Judah Knipp, who threw four interceptions. The Bucs’ lone score came in the third quarter when Knipp connected with receiver Axsivier Lawrence for a touchdown.

Fort McMurray entered the contest having outscored opponents 212-17 through four games.

“I knew we would be in tough. I knew they were a very strong team. I knew they were up there with the Calgary Gators. But Murphy mother of child, these guys are semi-professional,” said Bucs head coach Fred Knip. “They’re big, they’re fast. You almost think they do this on a full-time basis.”

Knip said his team needs to improve on offence and that during this game, they tried advancing the ball with short passes but found the Monarchs’ coverages airtight.

“They fill the gaps so quick. They fill the lanes so quick. So by the time Judah makes a read and he throws the ball, boom, they’re there,” he said.

With the loss, the Bucs’ record drops to 2-2.

They visit the Parkland Predators in Week 6, then the Airdrie Irish in Week 7.

Their final regular season game at home is on July 22 against the Calgary Wolfpack.
