Taking place for the 23rd year in a row, the Sutter Charity Golf Tournament makes another appearance in central Alberta this weekend.

It's the primary fundraiser for The Sutter Fund, which helps out local charities, non-profits and other sports organizations in the area.

Second oldest and former NHL star Brian Sutter says the reason him and brothers first set up this fund in 1996 was to help those in need, not for any recognition.

“Everybody asks how we give out the money, and it’s going towards $4 million in 23 years, and it’s through our sponsors, through you, and you know of people in need, and families in need, single moms, kids that need help in school, or I find out through police, RCMP, doctors, teachers; for kids that need help, it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.”

Sutter says the event Thursday night at the Black Knight Inn is all about giving back to the public, which is also the primary focus of the Sutter Fund.

“We want the public to be involved and see what we are doing and how we are doing it. They can bid on the silent auction items, and rub shoulders with the so-called celebrities and have a bite to eat. Bring your kids in, because that’s what it’s about.”

The tournament starts this Friday at the River Bend Golf Club.

Registration and the silent auction is Thursday night at the Black Knight Inn in Red Deer.
