On March 12, 2023, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a complaint of a male discharging a firearm at the Walmart parking lot in Red Deer.

After continuous investigation and patrols, at approximately 2:15 p.m. Red Deer officers located the male associated to this complaint in the area of Garden Heights and Carleton Ave. During the arrest of this male, an interaction occurred where officers discharged their firearms. As a result of the interaction, the male was taken to hospital with injuries.

As soon as the incident occurred Red Deer RCMP informed the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated an internal review process. The Director of Law Enforcement deemed this to be “in scope” and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the incident.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the Alberta RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the members involved will be subject to review. The Alberta RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
