Red Deers thunderstorm warning has ended. A severe thunderstorm watch for Lacombe, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake areas remains in effect.

The thunderstorm warning has been reinstated for the Red Deer area. A watch remains in Lacombe and Sylvan Lake area. 

 

UPDATE 7:02PM

The tornado watch has ended and the severe thunderstorm warning has become a watch for the Lacombe, Red Deer, and Sylvan Lake areas.

 

UPDATE 5:50PM

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the central Alberta area. 

  • Lacombe Co. near Eckville
  • Red Deer Co. near Sylvan Lake and Stephansson House

At 5:33 p.m. MDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, nickel to ping pong ball sized hail and heavy rain.

This thunderstorm is located 15 km southeast of Benalto and is moving 15 km/h to the northeast.

Environment Canada has now issued a tornado watch for many areas in Central Alberta.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible.

This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions:

  • Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
  • Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter,
  • move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris
