An afternoon explosion today (Nov 3rd) at Burnt Lake Industrial Park on the northwest edge of Red Deer has claimed the life of a 35 year old man.

Blackfalds RCMP were dispatched to the scene at J Moore Enterprises around 1:40 pm when they say a man was killed and a tanker truck destroyed.

“The tank portion of a tanker trunk had exploded when an employee was doing some maintenance on it. Because of the explosion the employee passed away, as a result of his injuries,” said Corporal Brandon Smith.

Smith says no one else was injured, but the explosion was felt by people in Red Deer.

There was minimal damage to surrounding buildings but debris was scattering in a radius of approximately one block.

Police have notified the man's family but are not releasing his name.

Occupational Health and Safety have control of the investigation into the cause of the explosion.
