The Town of Sylvan Lake announced that on June 14, 2022, it received a grant to install eleven electric vehicle charging stations. The grant is from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Station locations are planned for the NexSource Centre, Centennial Park, and the Library parking lot. Construction and installation begins this summer.


Grant details:

  • The grant dollars cover 100 percent of the cost of the installation project which comes to a total of $199,958.83
  • Once installed, the charging stations are pay per use

Charging stations:

  • Eleven charging stations total
    • Five Level 2 charging stations
    • Each station can charge 2 vehicles at the same time
    • Level 2 Charging stations utilize 240 volts and can fully charge an EV in five to 10 hours
    • Locations: Centennial Park, Library parking lot, NexSource Centre
  • One Level 3 fast charger
    • Level 3 Charging Stations use high voltages to charge the batteries which can be topped up to 80 percent battery life in as little as half an hour
    • Location: NexSource Centre

Construction:

  • Centennial Park stations
    • Starts in September when the tourist season slows down
  • The Library Parking lot and the NexSource Centre  
    • To be completed in summer 2022
