There is a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the central Alberta area.

Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts and large hail.

The area includes the Counties of Lacombe, Ponoka, Red Deer, and Stettler

Thunderstorms are forecast to develop along the foothills this afternoon and then move northeastward. The risk of severe weather is expected to persist into the evening hours.
