The impact of annual spring freeze/thaw temperatures are causing the Town of Blackfalds to take the precautionary measure of temporarily closing a portion of Broadway Ave to prevent unnecessary road degradation. Broadway Avenue north from Aspen Lakes Boulevard to slightly south of Township Road 40-0 will be closed starting Monday, March 28 and remain so until April 14, weather dependent.

High water conditions combined with vehicle traffic can negatively impact road structure, explained Infrastructure Services Manager Laura Thevenaz.

“During the spring freeze-thaw cycle, our Public Works department is limited in options to repair major rutting in this roadway.” she shared. “To preserve the road’s structural integrity, and for the safety of its users, the Town has chosen to close this section of Broadway Avenue temporarily.”

Motorists are requested to use Highway 2A for the time being. Access will be given to local traffic only (i.e., directly affected residences only), and the Town will notify the public as soon as the road has been reopened.

If you see unsafe or dangerous road conditions, you are encouraged to contact the Town.
