Red Deer Regional Hospital has welcomed two new anesthesiologists who will be providing care for patients across central Alberta.

Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed and Dr. Mona Elrebigi, who are married to one another, are now practising out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. This brings the number of anesthesiologists working in Red Deer to 15.

“Red Deer is a special place: centrally located, not too big, not too small, with many amenities, beautiful parks and river trails, nearby lakes and majestic mountains,” says Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is great to see more physicians choosing to make Red Deer their home, serving individuals and families in our wonderful community.”

Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed received his medical training in Egypt and spent a decade working as an anesthesia specialist in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Elrebigi went to school in Egypt and most recently worked in Vermilion, Alberta.

“Red Deer hospital offered me and my wife the opportunity to work together in the same hospital, so I consider it a family reunion,” says Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed. “That was the most interesting part of my move to here. Red Deer has a great strategic and geographical location in Alberta, and education opportunities for my 15- and 14-year-old children. The operating room team never stopped asking me and my wife how they could help us with anything, and that has a great meaning to us.”

Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to recruit for physicians across Alberta to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
