The topics of the Red Deer Public Schools Board March 13 meeting included identifying priorities in the three-year capital plan, a learning services report, and Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School Improve Teams taking home medals. 

Here are the meeting highlights:  

 

Three-Year Capital Plan 

The Board of Trustees identified their priorities for the 2025-2027 Three Year Capital Plan. Priorities include: 

  • The modernization of Oriole Park Elementary School, which would include full mechanical and electrical, architectural, and functional updates  

  • New Grade 6-8 school in northeast Red Deer for 600 students  

  • The modernizations of Gateway Christian School, Eastview Middle School, and Glendale Science and Technology School  

  • New Grade 9-12 school in northeast Red Deer for 1,000 students 

The Division's Three-Year Capital Plan must be submitted to Alberta Education no later than March 31. 

 

Learning Services Report 

The Learning Services Department supports teaching and learning across the curriculum with a focus on student achievement and the provision of equitable learning opportunities. Planning assessments for, of, and as learning, analyzing student achievement results, and reporting and communicating student progress are all important processes supported by Learning Services staff.  

Areas highlighted in their presentation included: 

  •  Alberta Education  

  • Assessments/Funding/Interventions  

  • Numeracy  

  • Literacy  

  • Science  

  • Fine Arts 

 

Financial Statements 

The Board of Trustees reviewed the financial statements for the second quarter of the year, ending February 29. Red Deer Public's annual budget totals $125 million. Total current revenues for Red Deer Public are $68,302,843 and total current expenditures are $68,080,081. Revenues and expenditures are currently in line with budget projections from the spring 2023-2024 budget that was approved by the Board. 

 

LTCHS Improv Team 

Two Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School Improv Teams took home medals at their prospective tournaments last month. The Nosebowl Team competed in the Nosebowl Theatresports Tournament in Edmonton in February. They played in the preliminaries and then advanced to the finals where they took home a silver medal. Alexis Moreside was also named tournament All-Star, and will perform with three other All-Stars from the tournament this spring at Rapid Fire Theatre in Edmonton, directed by a professional improviser. The Canadian Improv Games Team also brought home a silver medal as they competed in the Alberta Provincial Tournament.
