Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) is asking city residents to consider fire safety after a residential fire destroyed two homes in Kentwood on September 27th.

The fire started on one porch and quickly spread to another home.  The total estimated damage to the homes was more than $700,000. Both families were safely evacuated and had no injuries thanks to the fire alarms that notified them of the situation. The probable cause of the fire was believed to be a cigarette that improperly discarded.

RDES have provided some fire safety tips to avoid situations like this in the future:

  • Always dispose of cigarettes in proper containers
  • Use a deep, sturdy ashtray, not plant pots or other vegetation which can easily light on fire
  • Watch what you heat and keep attentive while cooking
  • Working smoke alarms save lives
  • Check your smoke alarms regularly
