UPDATE: 3:00 PM

The situation involving the jackknifed semi has been cleared. All lanes are completely open.

 

UPDATE: 11:40 am

An Alberta Emergency Alert was issued in regards to the deteriorating road conditions.

Severe winter weather conditions along Highway 2 from Leduc to Ponoka are impacting travel in both directions. Heavy snow, freezing rain and strong winds are causing dangerous driving conditions with zero visibility. Area highways and roads may be closed without notice. Snowfall will continue to move eastward today.

Drivers are instructed to not travel in this area.The QE2 southbound lanes at the junction of Highway 53 near Ponoka is closed due to a jackknifed Semi. 

Emergency crews are on site. There is a detour in place but drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Northbound QEII multiple semis stuck on the hill before Highway 53 near Ponoka. Expect major delays, traffic is getting through slowly.

Travel still not recommended in that area due to extreme winter driving conditions.

There have been reports of multiple crashes and vehicles in the ditch.
