Ponoka RCMP have received two reports of home invasions, both of which occurred in the area of Lucas Heights within the Town of Ponoka on May 4 and 13, 2023. Both break ins occurred between 2 and 5 am while the residential occupants were inside asleep. In both incidents, suspect(s) have gained access through open and unlocked doors and windows. Suspects have stolen vehicle keys and wallets in both cases and subsequently stole vehicles at the residences. Both investigations remain ongoing.

Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to provide it to members of Ponoka RCMP.

While RCMP investigate these crimes, we would like to remind residents to be aware of the security risks with leaving ground floor windows open during hot summer months.

In order to lower rates of preventable property crime, the Alberta RCMP has developed a routine checklist that you can follow to prevent crimes these types “crimes of opportunity.” The 9PM Routine is a movement that is supported by police forces across the world. People are encouraged to follow a routine checklist every night to double check their property is locked up and safe.

Property crimes are often crimes of opportunity and important details like locking doors and turning on lights can deter criminals. Follow this checklist every evening before you go to bed to protect your property:

  • Turn on outside lights at night
  • Lock your doors
  • Put away toys and bikes in a locked, safe location
  • Put away tools when you're finished with them
  • Put away outdoor equipment
  • Lock up off-highway vehicles
  • Double check vehicles are locked/keys removed
  • Double check that your garage/shed is locked
  • Set your home alarm (if you have one)
